Description:
This photograph shows the former World Chess Champion, Jos Ral Capablanca y Graupera, playing multiple games of Chess with members of the Eton Manor Boys' Club. The Club was founded in 1909 by a group of Old Etonians for the boys living in the impoverished area of Hackney Wick. It was renowned for the quality and variety of the facilities it offered in the areas of sport, art, amateur dramatics, music, and other activities. As can be seen in this picture, it was also visited by a number of top-ranked players of various games, including Capablanca, the England Cricket captain Douglas Jardine, and the future World-Cup-winning England Football manager, Alf Ramsey, who coached the Football team.
