- The feast of King Charles I is observed every year by the Church of England on 30th January to mark the anniversary of the King?s 1649 execution by Parliament during the British Civil Wars (1639-1651). In the Anglican Churches, Charles I is venerated as a Saint and Martyr, the only person in England so recognised since the 16th Century. The ceremony is this picture took place in 1932 at the Church of St. Andrew-by-the-Wardrobe which has existed for over eight hundred years. The present Church was built by Sir Christopher Wren in 1695 after the destruction of the old church in the Great Fire of 1666, and reconstructed following its partial destruction by German bombs in 1940.
