Photograph of Smoke from an Air Raid Hovering over the Thames Near Tower Bridge

The Blitz, the German bombing of London between 1940 and 1944, killed around 20,000 Londoners and destroyed approximately 1.4 million homes. In addition to these losses, areas of industry and commerce were targeted in bombing raids in order to cripple Britain?s ability to produce necessary supplies. In this photograph we can see smoke rising from a raid on the Docklands. The Docklands, an area downstream of Tower Bridge, were for many years the hub of the Port of London, one of the busiest ports in the world. Extensive damage was done to the area in the Blitz as part of the German strategy of damaging Britain's capability to wage war.
