Photograph of "Stop the Coloured Invasion" Protest in Trafalgar Square with "Keep Britain White" Banner -

Description:
This protest in Trafalgar Square is by a far-right group against immigration to Britain. In the years following the Second World War, immigration from the British Empire was encouraged in order to overcome labour shortages, notably in London Transport and the fledgling NHS. Many involved in this wave of immigration came from the British West Indies, including those on the well-known ship, Empire Windrush, which docked in Tilbury on 22nd June 1948. However, many new arrivals found that they met hostility and prejudice from the local population, with some boarding houses displaying signs reading ?no blacks, no dogs, no Irish.? This racially prejudiced, anti-immigrant attitude is displayed in this demonstration.
