Croydon Corporation Act 1956

The Croydon Corporation Act gave Croydon Council powers to buy, bring together and develop land in the borough.

The council used the Act to change the strategic infrastructure of the town centre. It planned a new underpass and flyover to manage traffic, and opened up space for change. Property developers rushed to create a new urban landscape between Wellesley Road and East Croydon station. The Whitgift Shopping Centre and 49 new office blocks created a modern skyline.

The Croydon Corporation Act laid the groundwork for central Croydon's transformation into a mini-Manhattan.
