Jews' Free School class - photograph

The boys in this class photograph are accompanied by their headmaster, Dr Enoch Bernstein, who is standing on the left. Dr Bernstein (1887-1965) was Headteacher of the Elementary section of JFS from 1931 until the closure of the school in Bell Lane. Originally a JFS pupil, he returned to become a science teacher in 1908. Bernstein was a strong believer in practical learning, and his period in charge is marked by the development of many of the facilities for which JFS was famous, such as the pottery kiln, print room, planetarium and model railway. At the left hand end of the second row from the front is Samuel Shrensky, later Samuel Sheridan, one of several brothers who attended the school.
