Fitzroy Tavern cellars - photograph
- These men are visiting the new cellars of the Fitzroy Tavern, in Charlotte Street. Proprietor Charlie Allchild stands on the right, and the novelist Louis Golding is in the centre. Charlie Allchild was married to Annie, the daughter of Judah Kleinfeld, a Polish Jew who took on the management of the Fitzroy in 1919. The pub became a celebrated meeting place for writers, artists and composers, and gave its name to Fitzrovia, the heart of literary London in the 1930s and 40s.
