The coronation procession of George VI as it passed Northumberland Avenue - photograph

Thousands of people took to the streets of London to watch the coronation procession of George VI. George had been known as Prince Albert, but took the name of George on his coronation. This emphasised the continuity of succession between his reign and that of his father, George V, in spite of the abdication of George V's original heir, Edward VIII. This photo was taken as the procession passed Northumberland Avenue. Spectators on benches sit behind rows of soldiers lining the route.
