Repairing bomb damage to a tunnel near Sloane Square Underground station - photograph

This photograph shows air-raid damage to the District line tunnel between Sloane Square and Victoria Underground stations. The brick retaining wall on the left has been badly hit. The District line runs just below the surface, so these tunnels were more easily breached by bombs. A gang of workmen are clearing rubble from the line. London Transport had to work hard to get the repairs done as quickly as possible so as to get the Underground system working again. This tunnel was created by the 'cut and cover' method: the tunnel was dug from the surface and then covered again.
