Interior of Hounslow bus garage staff canteen with staff - photograph
- Catering for staff was a major operation for London Transport (L.T.). It was important that workers had access to affordable meals, particularly at garages and depots that were not near cafes or shops. L.T. company records show that for one year, 1932, the turnover in staff canteens was ã154,000; nearly ã6.5 million in modern currency. None of this was profit. This photo was taken in the canteen at Hounslow bus garage in 1936. Garage staff are taking a break. The canteen looks rather run-down, but was refurbished the following year. It is interesting to note the frieze pattern running along the wall. Before the association of the swastika with the Nazis, it had been a popular design in the 1920s.
