The floodgates close at Trafalgar Square Underground station - photograph

The right floodgate at Trafalgar Square (now Charing Cross) appears to be about to shut behind the last passenger. Before the start of the war, the Underground management was concerned about a bomb piercing a tunnel under the Thames and causing widespread flooding. Half the London Underground system could have been affected. The advert proclaims the common British belief in the restorative properties of a cup of tea.
