Prince and Princess of Wales on inaugural ride of a London County Council electric tram - photograph
- Description:
- This specially decorated tram is carrying the Prince and Princess of Wales (later King George V and Queen Mary) on the opening of the first section of the London County Council (L.C.C.) electrified tramway between Westminster and one of the L.C.C.'s new cottage estates in Tooting. The prince, princess, and the rest of the party visited the Totterdown Fields workmen's estate. The design of this estate was influenced by the Garden City and Arts & Crafts movements, and favoured individual cottages rather than block housing. Shops closed and schoolchildren were given a day's holiday to join the celebrations. According to The Times, hundreds of thousands of people participated in the event. This photo was taken in Clapham.
