Cast iron staircase at Chiswick sub-station - photograph
- Description:
- This picture shows an ornate staircase inside the London United Tramways (L.U.T.) power station at Chiswick. L.U.T. was the first company to replace horse-drawn trams with electric ones. It opened this generating station in 1901 to power its network. At that time, most transport was operated by private companies and a few local authorities. There was much rivalry between the operators, as well as company pride. Both these things were expressed in the architecture and design of company buildings. The staircase is highly decorative, even though few people outside the power station would ever see it.
