Ms Agatha Claudette Hart - photograph

The young woman in this picture is Agatha Claudette Hart. In 1962, when the photo was taken, she worked as a bus conductor for London Transport. Hart was one of the hundreds of young West Indian men and women recruited during the 1950s and 60s. They came to fill vital roles within the transport network and in search of opportunities. However many experienced racism when they arrived in London, and had difficulties finding accommodation and gaining promotions. Agatha Hart worked from Stockwell bus garage. She is posing here in full uniform on the boarding platform of a double-decker. The machine she is carrying is a Gibson ticket machine.
