London Bridge Station - artwork

This painting is one of 24 works produced by Robert Soden in 1998. The series was commissioned by the Design Director of London Transport, Jeremy Rewse-Davies, to depict stations along the Jubilee Line Extension (J.L.E.). Soden worked directly from the subject, capturing candid snapshots of the construction process. This painting shows the vast new concourse area at London Bridge station. To either side are the new J.L.E. platforms, for which part of the Northern line had to be reconstructed. Routing the J.L.E. through London Bridge provided a fast-track link to the West End via Waterloo and the Docklands. The complexity of putting a new line through an existing operational station posed considerable architectural and engineering challenges.
