Kitty Godfree, Wimbledon tennis champion - photograph

Mrs Kitty Godfree (née McCane) from Britain won the ladies' singles championships at Wimbledon in 1926. She is pictured playing against Mrs Von Ellison. She went on to beat Miss E M de Alvarez from Spain, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in 60 minutes, to win the trophy and a £5 Mappin and Webb voucher. Mrs Godfree had also won the singles championship in 1924, and the mixed doubles in 1924 and 1926. She played with her husband, Leslie, and they were the first married couple to ever win the mixed doubles trophy. Mrs Godfree's nephew tells how his aunt used the vouchers she and her husband had won to buy enough jewellery to exchange for a bright green two-seater car.
