Suffragettes In and Out of Prison - puzzle game

This board game was bought for 1d (a penny) by Ernest King on 18 December 1908 from a street trader operating in the St Paul's area of London. The aim of the game, 'Suffragettes In and Out of Prison', is to find your way out of Holloway Gaol (pictured in the centre of the board). Players throw a die and move counters to see who will escape first. On the reverse of the card are printed instructions for playing the game and an advertisement for the 'Morning Leader' newspaper. This cheaply produced game sheet reflects the impact of the suffragette campaign on popular culture and Edwardian society. It would have been commercially produced as a satirical comment on the suffragette issue.
