Billingsgate Fish Market 1980 - print; colour lithograph
- Description:
- The second Billingsgate Fish Market on Lower Thames Street opened in 1876. Jane Tuely's lithograph, made just over 100 years later, depicts the interior of the building's arcaded market hall. The building was designed by City architect Sir Horace Jones. Tuely contrasts the high walls with the work below to suggest both a grand space and a functional building. Billingsgate Fish Market was relocated to Poplar, east London, in 1982. The old market hall on Lower Thames Street is now a listed building and corporate events venue.
