December Sunshine - painting; oil on canvas

This is a view from the painter's own house at 19 Queensland Avenue in Merton. Sometimes known as the 'Painter of the Suburbs', Harry Bush often painted such scenes, evoking the calm of suburban life despite the density of housing. Bush was born in Brighton but moved to Clapham in 1898 where he married fellow painter Noelle Nisbet in 1910. He studied at the Regent Street Polytechnic and joined Carlton Studios, a commercial art studio, where he worked under the artist Fred Taylor. The Bushes moved to Battersea Park Road and later Walham Green. They moved to the Merton house in 1914, where they remained until the end of their lives.
