Angel - painting; oil on canvas

Description:
From above Wakley Street, this bird's eye view looks down the junction of City Road and Goswell Road. Angel Tube station is being redeveloped on the right, and Pentonville Road stretches into the distance. Sharon Beavan was born in Wimbledon and works from her home in Islington. Here she captures the colour and energy of a main street in a central City borough in the late 20th century. People are small anonymous beings, almost insignificant in a sea of traffic and surrounded by an extraordinary forest of buildings. Traffic plays a central role in this painting, just as it does in London life. Beavan is interested in the 'epic' quality of the City, by which she means the dramatic and highly charged quality of urban life.
