Blackheath - painting; oil on canvas

John Bratby painted this view from his window at 42 Dartmouth Row. It looks northeast from the top of Blackheath Hill, at the Greenwich end of Blackheath. Bratby captures the light and landscape of the capital in powerful brush strokes but subdued colours, suited to London's mood on an overcast day. Born in Wimbledon, Bratby studied at Kingston College of Art and the Royal College of Art. He became known as one of the 'Kitchen Sink Painters' from 1954 because of his preference for domestic subjects.
