A mother buying bagels - painting; oil on board

Dora Holzhandler's painting depicts a woman and child choosing bagels from a Jewish bakery. Holzhandler's visit to a West Hampstead bagel bakery in West End Lane 'on a dark, winter afternoon' provided part of the inspiration for this work. The scene itself is imagined. It incorporates Holzhandler's memories of Grodzinski's bakery in Golders Green and her childhood spent in the East End. Born in Paris, Holzhandler moved to Dalston in 1933. She studied art in Paris and London in the late 1940s. Influenced by her interest in Jewish and Buddhist spiritualism, much of Holzhandler's work celebrates love, motherhood and religion.
