Cafe Box - model; mixed media
- Description:
- The Savoy Caf on Hackney's Graham Road was a typical 1950s-style 'greasy spoon' caf. Owned and operated by an Italian family, the caf closed in the mid-1990s. In Caf Box, James Mackinnon has faithfully recreated the Savoy's street facade. Behind the windows, photographs, props and lighting recreate a three-dimensional interior. 'A lot of London's most interesting architecture is slowly disappearing and I suppose I am capturing things which are not going to be around forever. But I'm also very interested in people and places and what mark people leave on buildings', he said. A Londoner born and bred, Mackinnon studied at Kingston Polytechnic. He gained some experience in film and television design before becoming a full-time painter and model maker.
