helmet; diving helmet

Description:
The Port of London Authority (PLA) was responsible for ensuring that the River Thames and the docks were kept clear of wrecks and other obstructions. PLA divers would check for obstacles below the water, help with repairs to underwater dock equipment and inspect ships for damage. This diving helmet includes an intercom device to allow communication between the diver and those on the surface. PLA divers worked in poor and dangerous conditions, the water in the docks being deep, murky and polluted. The equipment they wore, including this diving helmet, was also heavy and uncomfortable.
