- This portrait of a 'lascar' seaman was taken at King George V Dock. Sailors from India had come to Britain since the East India Company recruited them in the 18th century. A community of Indian seamen grew up in the Docklands areas of Stepney, Poplar, Canning Town, and near the West and East India Docks. King George V Dock had opened in the presence of the king in 1935.
