Women discussing a rent strike in Hanbury Buildings, Poplar - photograph

Description:
These women's squalid living conditions drove them and their families to join the Poplar Tenants' Defence League to help them organise a rent strike. Hanbury Buildings was known as one of the worst slums in east London. Cyril Arapoff documented the state of the dwellings. With journalist Jack Barker, he produced a series recording life in Hanbury Buildings for Picture Post magazine, but it was not published.
