African Caribbean funeral, Kensal Green Cemetery - Photograph

African Caribbean funerals can often combine celebration with mourning. Rituals include viewing the deceased, and family members helping with the burial accompanied by song. Mourners place flowers on the grave before leaving to continue paying their respects. The communities surrounding Kensal Green Cemetery have become more ethnically diverse since the 1950s, and people from various religious and cultural backgrounds now use the site. Born in Holland, Yoke Matze moved to London in 1982 to study for a degree in photography. Matze began photographing this Victorian cemetery, and the ritual of burial ceremonies for people of different cultures in the area, shortly after arriving in London.
