Piccadilly Circus, V.E. Day - Photograph

Celebrations on V.E. (Victory in Europe) day in London centred on Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square as people gathered there to rejoice. Winston Churchill and King George VI made speeches to the nation, officially announcing victory in Europe. Revelry had begun the previous night in Piccadilly: even in the darkened streets, people sang and danced. From outside the London Pavilion Wolf Suschitzky recorded the crowds, which included allied service members. Suschitzky's parents were Austrian Jewish Socialists, and his family had suffered at the hands of the Nazis. He had photographed much of the destruction inflicted on London through the bombing raids.
