This steel trunk has travelled hundreds of miles in the last 80 years. It belonged to the father of Khrishan Dayal, who lives in Ilford. It was first used when Khrishan's father left India for Uganda in 1925 to work as a railway goods clerk. He returned to India in 1939 along with the trunk. When Khrishan moved to Uganda in 1951 he took the trunk with him. In 1970 Khrishan moved to the UK and once again the trunk was shipped over. It was used for storage until April 2005 when Khrishan kindly donated the trunk to Redbridge Museum. About 21% of Redbridge's population are from a South Asian background. Many came to the UK from east Africa in the 1960s and 1970s.
