George and Mavis Moore with her niece, shortly before George left for London
- Description:
- George Moore left Guyana to move to London in 1952 and since 1967 has lived in Ilford. Aged 18, George was a qualified welder and moved to the UK to improve his prospects. On arriving, his suitcase was mislaid and he went to his first lodgings with only £18 and his clothes on his back! George's wife, Mavis, followed a year later. George's first job was as a welder working on a large ironwork display for the Coronation in 1953. Work was easy to find. They made many friends in London but Mavis and George also experienced hostility from some of their neighbours. Having spent the last 50 years living in London, they now consider Ilford to be their home but miss hot weather.
