Hampstead Shops Crisis poster
- Description:
- Economic policies under Margaret Thatcher recreated a divide between the rich and poor that had largely disappeared during the post-war period. Large chain shops began to dominate the high streets to the detriment of small-business owners. Hampstead was still feeling the effects of absorption into the Borough of Camden in 1964 and members of the local community sought to protect their identity and livelihoods through public meetings and campaigns. Peggy Jay was a leading figure in Hampstead politics, serving as chair of the Heath and Hampstead Society for many years.
