Cable Street - photograph

Description:
In this photograph, the police are clearing the way for a car carrying fascists to pass through the East End. The British Union of Fascists planned to march into Cable Street, in the heart of the East End, but they were met with massive counter demonstrations, and the narrow streets around Aldgate became completely impassable. Shops were closed, and many were boarded up. 300,000 people gathered at Leman Street, Gardiners Corner and Aldgate until it was clear that the march had been called off, and the fascists diverted along the Embankment.
