A Routemaster bus at Aldenham Works - photograph

Description:
This photo shows a Routemaster bus being overhauled at Aldenham Works. The works, opened in the mid-1950s, became the main London Transport bus works. Bus fleet maintenance was carried out regularly. A full overhaul was carried out once every two years. Here, the body is being lifted by crane from the chassis to allow access to the running units. Routemasters had light-weight aluminium bodies that facilitated maintenance and improved fuel consumption.
