Traffic in Holborn

Description:
This photograph shows a view of Holborn, on the borders of the City and Islington, in the early years of the 20th Century. Of particular interest is the combination of horse-drawn and motorised transport. At this time, motor vehicles, which had been invented at the close of the 19th Century, were fast displacing horse-drawn transport. In 1900, there were 300,000 horses in London; however, even by the time of this photograph, this was rapidly dwindling, as both public and private transport became almost increasingly motorised.
