Testimonial to George Jacob Holyoake for 24 Years' Service as Chair of the Travelling Tax Abolition Committee

Description:
This testimonial was presented by the Travelling Tax Abolition Committee to its chairman, the freethinker and co-operator George Jacob Holyoake. The Committee fought for the abolition of duty on rail fares, which had been introduced in 1832. Following the invention of the steam locomotive by Richard Trevithick in 1804 and improvements by George Stephenson in 1814, railways grew massively in the first half of the 19th Century. By the early 20th Century, they were a very important form of transport, carrying hundreds of millions of passengers a year.
